CarrollKids/CarrollTeens

CarrollKids/CarrollTeens is an academic and social enrichment for visually impaired and blind students between the ages of 6 and 16 years or through the completion of the sophomore year in High School. Individualized and small group instruction focus on literacy tools and techniques for both low vision and braille learners. Classes are provided in Orientation and Mobility, Adaptive Technology and Computer Skills, Communication and Organization Skills. Elements of the Expanded Core Curriculum are woven into the program through activities which promote confidence, independence, relationship-building and self-advocacy. Both day and overnight options will be available based on student ages and abilities. Pre-requisites may apply. Programs will be available at sites in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.

Youth in Transition

Improve your personal and communication skills while making new friends and learning new skills. This five-week residential programs for students ages 15 to 21, enables students to strengthen organizational skills, independent daily living skills and travel abilities through classroom activities and interaction with peers. Resource classes include benefit planning, career exploration, vocational rehabilitation services, personal and internet safety, and guide dogs to name a few. Join your friends on field trips to historic sites, the beach and amusement parks. Students increase their confidence, responsibility, self-reliance, and accountability in the transition from youth to adulthood.

Real World of Work Experience

Do you want to work this summer and make money while having fun with friends? Let us find your “first summer job” and help you make it a rewarding experience. Week one you will receive mobility training and job readiness classes. For the remaining four weeks you will work part-time, visit other employment sites and join your peers on field trips.
Students must have a work permit from their school systems, updated immunizations and a school ID. They must have travel skills and work a minimum of 15 hours per week. Previous Youth in Transition Students are given priority in this program.

Transition to College

You have the academics; now get the College Life Skills in this program that combines personal and vocational skill building. In the first two-weeks you will fine tune your independent skills in travel, information management, and personal care. The remaining two-weeks will be spent living and learning on a private college campus partaking in orientation type seminars. Learn about dorm life, disability services, managing readers, ordering books, creating a safe social life and more. Students will be required to have a PDA or other suitable notetaking system. Eligible students must have a GPA of 2.5 or better, completed their junior or senior year and pass a computer on-line quiz (or partake in the two-week computer course).

Computing for College

Strong written communication and computer skills are a necessity for students who attend college. In two- weeks, students advance their computer skills in internet access, email, and research, word processing tasks, and scanning with various formats. Students learn to search and download e-texts. Effective note taking skills are integrated into the classes.
Programs used include: MSWord, Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint & Kurzweil. Students should be current users of Windows with JAWs or Zoomtext software. Students are encouraged to bring their PDAs and/or laptop computers for training.

Summer Computer Courses

One or two-week computer courses will be available during the summer for students who need individualized instruction or are beginning computer users.

Attend an Orientation Program to Learn More!

Attend our February 20th or the April 23 Orientation Program to visit the Center, meet staff and fellow students and hear more about the summer programs. Orientation Programs are held at the Center from 10 am to 2 pm. No charge to attend, but you must register—family and friends are welcome. Call 800-852-3131.
