Assistive Technology Educational Services

The Carroll Center’s Assistive Technology Educational Services offers a variety of programs which promote independence through technology for students with visual impairments. Experienced staff with extensive experience in all types of assistive technology provide a team approach to technology assessment, planning, training and consultation.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT

A variety of high & low technology solutions for accessing a computer, printed material and viewing a blackboard or other classroom materials are considered for each student depending on his/her functional requirements and the demands of the school or home environment. Solutions considered may include low vision magnifiers or software, speech output, digital audio recorders, scanners, Braille printers, adapted notetakers and related technology.

LOAN OF DEVICES

Schools may obtain magnification and notetaking devices on loan for up to 3 months for the purposes of evaluation.

TECHNICAL SERVICES

Our Assistive Technology Staff are available to install and trouble-shoot computers with adaptive equipment. Equipment may be dropped off at the Center or onsite visits may be arranged for equipment at school or home.

TRAINING

Individual and group training is available to students, teachers and parents. Training is provided for each individual need on equipment loaned or purchased. Special classes are offered after school or during school vacations and the summer to provide intensive instruction in a group setting. One-day seminars for educators and parents are offered throughout the school year..

CONSULTATION

Assistance in recommending the most appropriate equipment, participation at Team/IEP meetings for technology implementation, support for student participation in computer courses and recommendations for home systems are a few of the services available.
