Off Campus Programs
Instruction At the Work Place
From time-to-time, situations arise where the nature of the program or device that a client needs instruction in the use of cannot be either brought to the Carroll Center or replicated in a way that instruction can be provided at our Technology Center in Newton Massachusetts. When this occurs, instruction can be provided at the work place. This may require that the instructor themselves undergo instruction from office staff or may require that the instructor have access to the device and/or program to develop a lesson plan and to create modifications to the access product being used.
Such instruction can last from 1 day to several weeks and need not be held on consecutive days. Each session must be at least one day in duration.
Instruction At the Home
Because individuals may have family responsibilities that limit their ability to reside at the Carroll Center during instruction, arrangements can be made for the instruction to take place in the clients home. In this case the client needs to have all of the equipment and programs to be used during the instruction and need to set aside time and a reasonable learning environment for the instruction to take place.
As with instruction in the work place, all instruction at the home must be conducted in sessions of at least one day but may take place over a number of days that need not be contiguous.
Instruction At the School
K through 12 students who need instruction as the result of being too young to stay on the Carroll Center campus or for reasons of scheduling requirements may request that instruction take place at the clients school. Such instruction can be conducted either during school hours or as part of an after-school activity. Classroom and/or special education teachers are encouraged to attend with the client so that they may assist the client in learning to accomplish educational goals.
All equipment and programs must be made available during the instruction and an appropriate location needs to be arranged at the school. Parents may also participate if such an arrangement is made in advance.
Each session must be at least 2 hours long but the instruction can take place over a number of weeks and sessions need not be on consecutive days.
Instruction At the College or University
College students have their own particular needs. If a student is using a unique combination of hardware and software that they cannot bring to the Carroll Center or that the Carroll Center cannot replicate for instructional purposes, instruction can be provided on the college campus.
The dates and times of this type of instruction are scheduled by mutual consent between the client and the instructor but may not be shorter than a half day. It may also be necessary for the client to provide a device or program to the instructor in advance of the instruction so that a lesson plan my be developed. If any installation or configuration is required, the client must also be prepared to assist in contacting the proper staff at the college. As with all off campus instruction, training dates need not be contiguous.
