The Carroll Center offers a variety of seminars and learning opportunities for professionals who work directly with individuals who have visual impairment as well as for other related professionals and family members. Paraprofessional Seminars
Instructional Aides working with children with vision impairment can attend workshops to learn about alternative learning media, instructional resources and strategies, promoting literacy, independence and socialization, and assistive technology.
General Training on Blindness
This one–day seminar is offered to educate professionals and family members about the causes of blindness, useful devices and strategies, sighted guide techniques, and support services. In–services can also be provided at job sites, schools, libraries, senior centers, group homes and nursing/assistive living facilities.
Orientation Program
Our monthly orientation program provides professionals new to the field or interested in what we do at the Carroll Center with information about our services and a tour of our facility and provides basic information about vision rehabilitation.
Technology Training
One day workshops on different types of assistive technology are offered throughout the year for educators, paraprofessionals, rehabilitation professionals, university staff and parents. Individualized training to educators with or without their students is also available. Group requests can also be made. Go to Professional Events or The Calendar for a current listing of seminars.
Annual Technology Fair
The Carroll Center hosts a Technology Fair each year on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving to give consumers and professionals an opportunity to learn about the latest assistive technology, interact with the vendors and share information. This event is free and open to the public.
Summer Institutes
DOE 2007 Summer Institute: Instructional Methods and Materials for Increasing Accessibility to Elementary and Middle School Science Curricula for Students with Visual Impairments.
Low Vision Demonstrations
Low Vision Demonstrations are provided monthly to gain a better understanding of the ever-changing video magnification equipment available and best practices for its use. Demonstrations are offered on the first Friday of each month between 2 pm to 4 pm. Reservations are required, but there is no cost. Each demonstration takes approximately 30 minutes.
