Cane and Driver Day Scores a Big Hit with Students

gets explored by visually impaired
children and adults.
Have you ever climbed onto a fire engine, and put on a complete fireman’s outfit? How about sitting on a motorcycle, ringing the siren on a police car or feeling the engine of a race car? These are just some of the experiences that the students in the Carroll Center summer youth programs had recently at the 4th annual Cane and Driver Day. This unique program is the creation of Rehab Program Director, Rabih Dow, gives these young students an opportunity to climb around on vehicles they have had described to them and that they have heard coming down the street but usually never explored up close.
Newton police and fireman were joined by ambulance drivers, city truck drivers and private vehicle owners to share their vehicle and their expertise with Carroll Center summer students. The highlight of the annual event is Jay Blake, Carroll Center graduate and race car mechanic, who brings his race car for the kids to gain a completely different experience. This is followed by an inspirational presentation by Jay on how he achieved success after suddenly losing his vision in an accident.
Further information on the Event can be obtained from the article ‘Getting a feel for the road’ in the Newton TAB.
